I started it. The first 100 pages (essentially all of book 1) were a chore for me. I appreciated City's experience, but the language, the focus on masturbating and his sack were a turn-off to me. My book club reads a LOT of diverse literature (other recent selections American Marriage, If Beale Street Could Talk, Buddha in the Attic), but this one wasn't doing it for me. I had a talk with myself saying "there is a world that is different from your white world, there are other cultures, you need to do this." I am SO glad I pressed on. What an amazing, complex, thought-provoking story - or collection of stories.
