I couldn't put The Goldfinch down, to the point where I stayed up past 2 am for two nights in a row just to take in as much of it as I could. Tartt's language is gorgeous and deeply evocative, and her protagonist, Theo Decker, is complex and appealing. The man who painted it was a student of Rembrandt and died in a gun powder plant explosion.
